Dating is only used in a romantic sense. Yes, it means that there is a potential for a sexual/romantic relationship developing. By sexual, I simply mean a boy/girl relationship. So, if you asked one of your same sex friends to go out with you, thats not called a date (unless youre homosexual, of course).
